Great research, and I so agree! My daughter who lives in NYC and comes home twice a year gets her prescriptions from French doctors here and pays out of pocket. Although she has some health coverage in the US, it still works out much cheaper this way. The US health system is a disgrace.
This good news is part of a go slow strategy by the private health care industry. they have found other ways of profiting from illness. The obesity issue is a major source of growth as are anti-anxiety and mood enhancement therapies. Better living through chemistry.
Absolutely love the references given! It's interesting to study and compare different healthcare systems 🤔 India here doesn't have a unified national health system or a specific program, we've got state-specific health insurance schemes and health initiatives rounded under the Central goverment. Healthcare's a mixed system, with the private sector unsurprisingly dominant. The public sector's free and low-cost, but it's underfunded; private sector (Fortis, Apollo, Max, Artemis) offers top-notch care, but it's crazy expensive. The rich get their benefits, which is variable for the poor, but it's the middle class that has to struggle everywhere.
Thanks Aparna. Yes, India represents a complex case study--thanks for adding your observations to the mix. Canada would have been an obvious comparator in my commentary, too, but the differences that arise due to the role of the provincial governments also makes it more challenging to summarise briefly. It seems to have that in common with India.
Great essay. I appreciate learning more about other healthcare systems. I researched and put together a newsletter on pharmacy benefits managers but stumbled upon a greater danger that is rapidly catching on, "payviders," and I am putting an essay together to warn as many as I can reach. Despite continuously coughing with a head cold, I will try to post it today. I restacked your essay. I didn't misspell the word PAYVIDERS. The parasites are working as fast as possible to extract wealth from Medicare, hospital systems, and the middle class.
Gloria, thanks for your comments. I've not heard previously the concept of "payviders" and am curious to learn from your next posting about it (and sorry about your cold).
I sat in on a virtual meeting with some Americans living in Germany and we agreed that trying to build awareness of how specific circumstances are dealt with in countries outside the US would be instructive, too few people are aware how regressive things are in the U.S. The White House statement on 31 Dec seemed like an opportunity to focus on just one issue and I'll look for future opportunities as well.
Well, wouldn't you have a backup yacht for your mega yacht? Think big. If you were worth 100 billion or more, it would be important to keep you happy and try....It really is obscene.

Yes, it’s why we left 15 years ago
Yes, and it’s why I’m never moving back to the USA regardless of what life throws my way.

In Norway the cap is $290 for doctor visits and prescriptions. Hospital stays are free.

And Mark Zuckerberg has a mega yacht. And...a "support" yacht that follows it. Both have helicopter hangars.
