Thanks for bringing up these questions! I’m one of those who sees AI as causing more damage than good, since it is based on our human tendencies and often governed by investors and executives, not by those who put in the work.

This is such an important topic, John, and the questions you raise are so valid. I have no idea what the answers are--I don't think anyone does at this point.

I am so cautious about AI since the time I worked in higher education šŸ˜ž Now the blasted thing appears every time a Google a query. And I have found so many inconsistencies in its responses I end up spending more time looking for authentic information šŸ™„

I used to use AI to help dig up research sources for my articles, but for the moment have become disenchanted by even that. Sure, I found a few documents that I might not have been able to locate otherwise, but was the time spent going back and forth as well as, as you say, reading plenty of pure bullshit worth it? Likely not.

So now that I've learned how to cook a perfect veal roast (non-writing related) and gotten a basic grasp of what AI can do for supposed "writers", I'm trying to stay away from the bots. Although with whole companies and university systems going all in on them, I suspect it is a futile contribution to a lost cause.

You are right, there is potential evil lurking there. Don't you think it's more than coincidence that the US president is such a strong supporter of AI?

The US president buys into the racist notion of the Great Replacement … but his with advocacy for AI he also supports the real Great Replacement … of white collar workers with AI.

Great questions John. It is frightening how willing we seem to be as societies to be abdicating our important decision making to AI--even in things like warfare in selecting targets and to swarms of inexpensive self-coordinating attack drones (complete with human attributes?). Yikes!
